Q.  Quantitative or Qualitative Fit Testing for our Avon masks?

A. Avon suggests using Quantitative Fit Testing. Qualitative fit testing relies on the individual's sensory detection of a test agent, (e.g., taste, smell, or involuntary cough), while quantitative fit testing uses an instrument to numerically measure the effectiveness of the respirator, it is an analytical method (non-subjective).

The protection offered by Avon products will be greatly reduced by poor facepiece fit. Due to the natural variations in the human facial features, no one size of a full-face mask can be guaranteed to fit all persons. Prior to donning the facepiece for use, the user must be fit tested to determine the facepiece size, adjusted harness length, and donning method that provides the optimum level of protection. This must be conducted following established guidelines and is recommended to be performed using a Quantitative Fit Test method. Avon Protection does not perform these tests. You/your company must utilize the established guidelines for your company's specific mask and fit test requirements. You need a machine, (two options are OHD Quanifit or TSI Portacount), in order to perform an accurate fit test.

Quantitative Fit Testing allows the user to measure and evaluate the fit of a facepiece on an individual using measurable standards. Fit testing of any respirator’s model is a very important part of the respiratory protection program. It confirms and documents that the specific respirator model selected for the worker fits properly. Quantitative fit testing uses an analytical instrument to determine if there has been a measurable leak of the respirator. Quantitative Fit Test exercises must be performed in accordance with the fit test equipment manufacturer’s instructions, and as required by established local or State protocol.

  • What adapter do I need?”.  You must know which mask you have in order to determine which adapter it requires.
    • Avon has Surrogate face masks for the Deltair mask because our second stage regulator is affixed to the mask. Please contact customer service for details.
