General Cleaning & Disinfection Procedures

This document provides recommended procedures and products for cleaning and disinfecting Avon Protection equipment:

Cleaning - refers to the removal of germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces. Cleaning does not kill germs, but by removing them it lowers their numbers and the risk of spreading infection.

Disinfecting - refers to using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs, but by killing germs on a surface after cleaning it can further lower the risk of spreading infection.

Decontamination - this document does not contain or reference any specific decontamination procedures following exposure to known or unknown chemicals or environments.

PREPARATION Clean mask before disinfecting/sanitizing

CLEAN Clean applicable products using lukewarm water and mild cleaning detergent (pH neutral soap solution). Then thoroughly rinse with clear, lukewarm running water.

DISINFECT Recommended Products: Milton Fluid - Recommended Dilution Rate 30 ml (one capful) – 5 L water (0.6% volume per volume v/v). Virkon S 1% solution, 1 pint (500 ml) water to 1 Virkon S tablet (1 Gallon (4.5 L) water to 8 Virkon S tablets).

Cautions & Warnings Avon Protection does not recommend any cleaning/sanitizing products outside the scope of this document. Ensure correct PPE as recommended by the manufacturer is worn. Ensure equipment is only allowed to remain in contact with any disinfecting/ sanitizing solution for the manufacturers recommended time, 3 minutes. Ensure equipment is rinsed thoroughly in clean warm water for at least 5 minutes, and allowed to air dry for at least 60 minutes before storage. It is important to ensure the product is fully dry to reduce the risk of mould growth during storage. DO NOT exceed manufacturers recommended dilution/dosage instructions, as this can cause damage to the product. Waste products generated by the cleaning and disinfecting/sanitizing processes described in this document should be safe to dispose of in the normal domestic waste-water system. Please check your local environmental protection guidelines, or seek professional advice for further information. Removal and refitting of all APR, PAPR & SCBA components and accessories is covered in the relevant user instructions (UI) specific to the equipment being cleaned/disinfected.
