Q: Can an Avon Protection C50 respirator be used with two filter canisters?

A: Not recommended.

The second port in the twin port variant is always fitted with a plug that can only be fitted and removed by the use of a special tool. As the mask is designed for specialist user groups and is not available to general industrial users, closing the second port in this way, but still allowing the filter to be mounted left or right in the same mask, is deemed to bring the mask into compliance with PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425.
Potential misuse of the equipment may result in serious, irreversible respiratory harm or death. These actions include:
Modifying, removing or re-configuring any of the system components other than as recommended by the manufacturer.
Adapting the system to accommodate attachments or apparatus not approved for use by the manufacturer.
NPPTL CDC Statement of standards for CBRN APR Section 3.4 applies. Maximum weight of respirator mounted canister shall be 500 grams.
For regulatory approved systems that use of two filters in this way would make the system non-compliant with regulatory requirements, and as such we cannot advise to the contrary.
Alongside compromised weapon sighting, user comfort and fit of the respirator may be potentially compromised due to the additional mass, for which the product was not designed (it is designed to minimise burden and maximise protection).
